Education on St. CroixPublic and private education is available for all Virgin Islanders from pre-school through college. The government operates Head Start centers on all three islands and there are numerous private pre-schools. CROIX PUBLIC SCHOOLSThe Public Elementary Schools are located in Fredensborg, Richmond, La Grande Princesse, Kingshill, Concordia, St. Peter, Frederiksted, Sion Farm, Mount Pleasant, Strawberry and Grove Place. St. Croix has two public high schools, Central High School, with grades 10 through 12 and St. Croix Educational Complex grades 9 through 12. The island has three junior high schools grades 7 through 9. They are Elena Christian Junior High located in La Grande Princesse, Arthur Richards Junior High in Stoney Ground and John H. Woodson Junior High in Fredensborg. Students can receive Associate's Bachelor's or Master's degrees at the University of the Virgin Islands campus in St. Croix. The University attracts a diverse population of local residents and students from around the Caribbean and the continental United States. The University opened its doors in 1963 in a sprawling facility across from the Cyril E. King Airport once used by the U.S. Navy. The St. Croix campus opened in 1964. In addition to its academic programs, the university provides numerous other services for public information. In St. Croix, most classes are held in the Melvin H. Evans Center for Learning, which opened in 1975. Plans for a residential hall are on the drawing board for the St. Croix campus. The 130-acre campus at Golden Grove in St. Croix is home to the Agricultural Experiment Station and is the headquarters for the University's Extension Service in St. Croix.
