Getting Around St. Croix

Cars drive on the left side of the road in the Virgin Islands. The cost of gas is better in St. Croix because Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corporation refines the gas in a plant on the island's south shore. Regular runs about $2.29 a gallon. Some stations have a cheaper price for pump-it-yourself gas.

Carry your driver's license. Watch and obey traffic signs. Even if a school bus does not have his red flashers on, following and on coming cars must stop for loading and unloading school busses. Make sure the road ahead is clear before passing traffic in the same direction. Put low-beam headlights on half-hour before sunset and a half-hour before sunrise. Use hand signals or blinker signals for turns and stops. To help others see you in the rain, turn on parking or headlights, not the emergency flashers used when your car is disabled. Obey speed limits. In St. Croix, they are 20 miles per hour in town and 35 miles per hour outside of town. On St. Croix's Melvin H. Evans Highway, the speed limit is 55.

It is best to get complete directions to your destination before starting out. Keep a map in the glove compartment. In St. Croix, all major roads are named and numbered and both are used. In Christiansted and Frederiksted, the numbers start upward on one side of the street, cross over at the end, and begin downward on the other side. Christiansted's numbering begins at the waterfront, runs inland to the old city limits and then returns on the other side of the street. Frederiksted's numbers begin at the north town limits or at the waterfront on the west. The main streets, and those that parallel them, have long blocks. The cross streets have short ones. Corner plots usually take their number from the main streets, though the building's entrance may be around the corner.

The government-owned Vitran bus lines operate service on St. Croix. They are new, clean and air conditioned. Stops located frequently across the islands have signs that carry the Vitran logo. Service runs from 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Senior citizens and students get a discount if they present their identification. Vitran operates four bus routes between Christiansted and Frederiksted with a transfer station at LaReine. All trips are $1 and you can call them at 773-1664 for schedules and routes.

In St. Croix, private taxi vans pick up passengers for unscheduled and unregulated service between Christiansted and Frederiksted. They stop only along the main road between those towns and charge about $2 to $4 per trip. Wait for them at shopping centers and bus pull-offs. If you're not sure whether they are a private taxi van or a regular regulated taxi, ask first.

Taxis are unmetered and fares are determined by destination. Fares are fixed by law, but it is best to agree on a fare before you go.
